Veolia and Westminster City Council’s Community Mobile Recycling Centre trial will be expanding to provide more residents with easy access to hard to recycle items.
It can be hard to find the right places to recycle everyday household items such as clothing and electricals, but not impossible, which is why Veolia and Westminster City Council are bringing the recycling centre to you.
The Mobile Recycling Centre doesn't just focus on recycling, but also showcases how important reuse is for the City’s zero-waste journey too. June’s trial was a resounding success with unanimously positive feedback from the 150 residents who made use of the centre in just one day. Over 60% of all items brought in were also donated, repaired or recycled.
Helder Branco, Veolia Westminster General Manager:
We are thrilled to bring the Community Mobile Recycling Centre to residents, making it easier for them to recycle and promote reuse and repair as part of our ecological transformation journey. The success of our trial event and positive feedback from residents reveals how vital such a resource is in the community and we can’t wait to welcome many more people to our next event.
The next event will take place on Churchill Gardens estate on Saturday 30th September from 10am to 4pm.
The Centre hosts five different zones for residents to explore. Items brought on the day will be evaluated at the drop-off zone and either donated to the swap shop or placed in one of the many bins for different recycling streams. Residents can bring:
- Household metals
- Small electricals
- Batteries and vapes
- CDs and DVDs
- Plus many more (see the website for the full list: www.westminster.gov.uk/recycling-and-rubbish/reusing-and-other-recycling-services/community-mobile-recycling-day)
For residents with larger items to dispose of such as freezers and mattresses, there will be a free bulky waste collection zone where these can be dropped off. For this service, residents simply book online before the event, bring along a form of identification that proves Westminster residency and turn up at their allotted time.
The most popular attraction is the Swap Shop which displays reusable items from the drop-off zone for all residents to browse. The swap shop operates on a ticketed basis, five tickets will be given to residents that have donated and three to those who haven’t. These tickets can be exchanged for items in the shop, one ticket per item.
A learning zone focuses on reuse with leaflets, mixed recycling and food waste bags and the chance to speak with one of Westminster’s recycling experts and Dr Bike will be in attendance in the Bike Repair zone helping residents get their bicycles back on the road.
